Reflecting on Family Legacy: Setting Estate Planning Goals for the Future

Posted by Susan A. Katzen | Feb 02, 2025 | 0 Comments

Jack and Mary were one of the sweetest couples I've ever worked with. When they came to see me, they brought a folder with their original estate plan from 1995. Back then, their primary concern was providing for their young children if something happened to them. Their plan included guardianship provisions and basic asset distribution, and it served them well for many years.

But life had changed dramatically since then. Their children were now adults with families of their own, and Jack and Mary were proud grandparents. They had also become deeply involved in their community, supporting local charities and even starting a scholarship fund. When we reviewed their plan, it was clear it no longer reflected their values or priorities.

For example, their plan didn't include any provisions for charitable giving, even though philanthropy had become a central part of their lives. They also hadn't updated their guardianship designations or accounted for new assets, like their vacation home. Jack and Mary were shocked to realize how much their lives had evolved without their estate plan keeping pace.

We worked together to create a new plan that honored their legacy. We updated their trust to include specific bequests for their grandchildren's education and established a charitable foundation to support causes close to their hearts. We also made sure their vacation home would stay in the family, with clear instructions for its use and maintenance.

Estate planning is about more than money; it's about creating a legacy that reflects who you are and what you stand for. Whether it's supporting your family, giving back to your community, or preserving cherished traditions, your plan should tell your story.

As you set your goals for the new year, take a moment to reflect on what matters most to you. Does your current estate plan align with your vision for the future? If not, it's time to make a change.
